A Huge Part of the Internet Runs on Technology Once Written by a Single Engineer
Published: 16.05.2026
Today NGINX powers:
— Netflix
— Wikipedia
— Airbnb
— Dropbox
— Cloudflare
— WordPress
and a massive part of the modern internet.
But the most interesting part is that nginx was originally written almost entirely by one person.
No giant corporation.
No marketing machine.
No loud “changing the world” speeches.
The creator of nginx is Igor Sysoev.
In the early 2000s, Sysoev worked as a system administrator at Rambler.
At that time, the industry faced a major problem: Apache struggled with handling a large number of simultaneous connections.
For the rapidly growing internet, this was becoming a serious limitation.
That is when Sysoev started writing his own web server.
And the goal sounded almost crazy for that era — handling 10,000 simultaneous connections on a single machine.
Today that sounds normal. But in the early 2000s it was a serious engineering challenge.
In 2004, nginx was publicly released as an open-source project. Completely free.
No investors.
No launch day.
No social media hype.
Just an engineering solution to a real problem.
And then something happened that developers love — the technology started growing naturally because of its quality.
By 2008, nginx was already handling hundreds of millions of requests per day inside Rambler.
Later, together with Maxim Konovalov, Sysoev founded Nginx Inc.
Netflix later used nginx for its streaming infrastructure and CDN.
Over time nginx became one of the key technologies behind the modern internet.
In 2019, F5 acquired the company for $670 million.
And in 2021 nginx officially surpassed Apache and became the most popular web server in the world.
Today, a huge part of websites and online services run through nginx.
Honestly, the most powerful part of this story is not the acquisition or the scale of the technology.
It is how quietly everything happened.
No personal brand.
No endless interviews.
No cult of personality.
There was simply an engineering problem.
One person sat down and solved it so well that years later a huge part of the internet still runs on his code.
And honestly, this is often how the strongest technologies in IT are born.
Not from beautiful presentations, but from solving a real problem better than everyone else.
